The Women's Center is an exciting and challenging placement for master's and doctoral candidates in counseling and social work. Undergraduates who are interested in learning more about nonprofit management and/or program administration are also encouraged to contact us about upcoming opportunities. We are an official clinical practicum site for students from Eastern Michigan University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Spring Arbor University, Wayne State University and others.
We train 18-23 graduate students each year, in overlapping semester-based rotations. Each student is closely supervised/mentored by an experienced clinician or program administrator. Student interns benefit from excellent individual and group supervision; clients, in turn benefit from low worker-client caseloads and affordable services.
If you are self-directed, enjoy working collaboratively, are open to a variety of counseling techniques and approaches, and appreciate a lively work environment, then The Women's Center may be the right choice for you. We begin interviewing 4-6 months ahead for positions beginning January, May, and September.
The Women's Center offers a warm and supportive atmosphere, where creativity is appreciated, and where interns—in addition to clients—are encouraged to build on their strengths. All interns engage in a full schedule of client assessments, resource and referral, intake interviews, and one-on-one counseling. Each person has many opportunities to practice the technical aspects of counseling, as well as to develop cultural competency and a personal counseling style.
But you won't be in this alone! Women's Center staff provide supervision in multiple formats: mandatory weekly group supervision; one-on-one-supervision with a senior clinician; and peer supervision from the many talented interns and therapists sharing the intern office.
As part of our commitment to organizational transparency and collaboration, we also offer clinical interns the chance to work on agency-wide projects. Interns are encouraged to choose a project from any one of the four categories: administration and support, marketing and development, communications, or programs.
Our program is known throughout the area for its excellence. We make a concerted effort to attract students of diverse cultural backgrounds, and have had a number of international student graduates who go on to work at organizations in the United States and beyond.
We are proud of the many interns who wish to come to The Women's Center—many more than we can accommodate. Clinical interns should email us 3-9 months ahead of time to arrange an interview with our Clinical Coordinator, Marnie Leavitt <marnie@womenscentersemi.org>. Undergraduates interested in program administration should email Program and Volunteer Coordinator, Joan Kauffman <joan@womenscentersemi.org>
