Guiding Values

The Women's Center of Southeastern Michigan is dedicated to emotional and economic self-determination for women, girls, and families.

Guiding values and beliefs:

  • We are committed to high-quality, financially-accessible service regardless of individual income or insurance status.  No one will be turned away due to an inability to pay.
  • We affirm equal access to our services, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, racial/ethnic background, ability, or income level.
  • We believe that girls and women are intelligent, courageous, resilient, creative, and resourceful human beings who deserve support to discover and magnify their inherent strengths and to realize their potential.
  • We maintain that gender discrimination and other oppressions, power and economic inequities, domestic and sexual violence, and the silencing of women's voices are still commonly practiced in our society and profoundly impact emotional, economic, and physical health.
  • We work with participants to distinguish individual problems from systemic problems, and to choose among individual and social change efforts.
  • We provide opportunities for participants to question, challenge, and make suggestions about social and economic policies that may ultimately impact their lives and the lives of their families.
  • We bring together people and programs, both inside and outside our agency, to build a continuum of economic and emotional support.
  • We honor diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • We strive for egalitarian decision-making in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
  • We promote self-determination by raising consciousness, building confidence, and strengthening connections—one person, then one family, then one community—at a time.
