There is an important change regarding Retirement Account Distributions for 2021.
The Required Minimum distributions (RMDs) are the amounts which investors must withdraw every year from their retirement savings accounts including traditional IRAs, and employer-sponsored plans such as 401(k)s, and Roth 401(k)s. In 2020, Congress had enacted special legislation (SECURES ACT) which increased the RMD age from 70½ to 72, and RMDs were waived altogether under the CARES Act.
There is no longer an RMD waiver for 2021.
Unless you are taking your very first RMD this year, anyone age 72 or older as of December 31, 2021, must take their RMD by year-end to avoid a hefty 50% penalty. (First timers have until April 1, 2022.)
Your RMD is usually included as part of your taxable income. To avoid increasing your income subject to tax, please consider gifting all or part of it by making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to The Women’s Center! An individual may gift up to $100,000; spouses who file jointly may each donate up to $100,000 from their own IRA. This gift to us will be excluded from your taxable income, thus lowering your income subject to tax. (Please note there is no charitable deduction for this gift, as it was exempted from tax when it was deposited into the IRA.)
You can lower your tax exposure, while giving much needed support to The Women’s Center!
