The Women’s Center is one of the leanest nonprofits around. We have only 4.75 full-time staff. We are able to keep costs low and quality high thanks to loyal and committed volunteers, now numbering over about 70. Community members also contribute financially or donate items that help us cut down on overhead expenses and make The Center a welcoming space.
Skilled volunteers help us with everything from marketing to computer repair to providing personal, financial and legal counseling. In addition to an active Board of Directors, volunteers include therapists, job coaches, attorneys, financial counselors, event planners, computer and database experts, electricians and office personnel. Among our volunteers are a dozen of Michigan’s best and brightest graduate student interns in social work and counseling. We appreciate all the hard-working people who make our low-cost services possible.
The Women’s Center is proud to be an official internship placement site. In partnership with local universities, we supervise and instruct 18-23 counseling and social work graduate interns per year.
It also helps enormously if you are able to contribute items that we can use to support our programs (i.e., paper products) or that we can share with program participants (gift cards, tea, breakfast bars). In-kind contributions are money in the bank to us — just one less thing that we need to purchase.
