Housing
Housing is a human right
When it comes to housing, options are limited. Safe and affordable housing would make an amazing difference in the lives of ordinary people, especially women and children. Many women stay in unhealthy relationships because they cannot afford an alternative.15% of Women’s Center clients report that they do not have a permanent place to live.
Washtenaw County has a number of shelter-focused nonprofits. Nonprofits use a central referral system — HAWC (Housing Alliance for Washtenaw County) 734.961.1999, which is managed by The Salvation Army. HAWC helps people locate available housing, but they cannot add to the limited stock of apartments and homes in our area.
The community relies on housing nonprofits and public will to advocate for shelter that people can afford.
